What is the plant

An exceptional and ephemeral alien, probably always introduced with cereals (incl. birdseed). Formerly recorded in Dison (1886) and Val Benoit (1928). Recently seen as an urban pavement weed in the city of Gent in 2005.

Height : 15-60 cm. Plant more or less glabrous. Stem geniculate at base, node brownish, leaves with ligule membrane about 1 mm. Inflorescence : panicle about 15 cm, slack, spikelets multifloral, 6.5-10.5 mm (with awn ). Fruits : caryopsis. Biological type : Annual.

How to get rid of: If parts areremoved, leave a short stub so that it is evident what has occurred. This is also a good time to get rid of the dirt or mud trapped in the roots. It can ruin the specimen and label if allowed to remain.
