It is a species of monocotyledonous plants of the genus Timothy (Phleum) of the family Cereals (Poaceae). The taxonomic name was first published by the Swedish taxonomist Karl Linnaeus in 1753.
An annual herb 1-20 cm high. Leaves are smooth, linear or lanceolate. Inflorescence is an ear bearing small green flowers. Fruit is a yellow caryopsis. Blossoms in June. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14
