Stems up to 150 cm, erect, grooved, usually branched from the base. During the first year of life, a rosette of shaggy leaves develops. Leaves oblong basal, 10-25 cm, stem from linear to lanceolate, from dentate to pinnately dissected. The petals are purple (less often white). Fruits (achenes) are about 3 mm long (without bangs), dark brown in color.It grows around the Mediterranean Sea, including Israel, Morocco and Mallorca (Balearic Islands), but excluding Corsica and Crete. The species was introduced locally to the southwestern United States (California and Arizona). Selects arid, barren, dry ditches and dry rocky habitats.
