How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water the plant regularly until the first sprouts appear. The first watering in a new place should be abundant, about 1 bucket per 1 bush. After stems appear, increase the amount of watering by about one and a half times, and check the soil to prevent stagnant water.
Pruning
Trim faded buds as soon as possible. During the growing season, monitor the appearance of weeds and remove them immediately. At the end of autumn, before the onset of the first frost, the bushes should be spud to protect the root.
Fertilizer
The top dressing may not be necessary for the presence of a rich substrate. Use complex mineral fertilizers to feed the plant immediately after heavy watering and loosen the substrate. For 1 m² of land, you will need 10 grams of nitrogen, 25 grams of phosphorus, and 15 grams of potash fertilizer. In winter, top dressing is not required.
Sunlight
The place for Canna Lily should be well-lit by sunlight and protected from the wind. This plant does not tolerate drafts, and if you keep the plant indoors, choose a sunny location with diffused light. For example, a south window shaded by a curtain is suitable.
Soil
You can choose a nutritious, rich substrate with plenty of organic matter and good drainage, and expanded clay is well suited too. Soil mix can be prepared from leafy soil, peat, humus, and coarse sand in equal proportions.
Propagation
You can germinate Canna Lily from seeds. However, propagation by cuttings is usually much faster and requires less effort. Seeds do not retain the varietal characteristics of the mother plant, and you can also propagate the plant by dividing the tubers.
Temperature
The ideal temperature for mature plants is 64-77 degrees Fahrenheit (18-25 Celsius). The minimum temperature that Canna Lily can tolerate is 45 (7) degrees.
Container
After overnight spring frosts, you can gradually begin to prepare the place for planting flowers in open ground. Experienced flower growers advise planting no earlier than May. Before that, carefully examine all the tubers for diseases. If you want to grow the plant at home, be sure to use a container with a pallet. Canna Lily does not tolerate excess moisture well.
Fun fact
The Indians of tropical America have cultivated Canna Lily since ancient times because of the starchy rhizomes eaten baked.
