Ctenanthe are grown for their attractive, often variegated foliage. They are frost tender plants, requiring a minimum temperature of 13°C. The three species which make good houseplants are C. lubbersiana, C. oppenheimiana, and C. burle-marxii. Ctenanthe is not an easy care plant and can be quite frustrating for a novice grower. How to Care for the Plant
Water
Keep soil moist at all times. Allow the top of the soil to dry out slightly before watering.
Pruning
Only needed to control size and remove dead foliage. Plant will spread out if allowed to.
Fertilizer
Apply a weak dose of a liquid fertiliser once or twice a month during the growing season.
Sunlight
Bright, indirect light. Will tolerate some degree of shade; however insufficient light may cause loss of variegation in the leaves. Too much light on the other hand will cause the leaves to fade.
Soil
Nutrient rich, well-draining potting mix. Equal parts potting soil, peat and perlite works well.
Temperature
Normal room temperatures from 16-24°C but can cope with as low as 13°C.

Considered slightly poisonous. Keep away from children and animals and take care when handling.
