Found in moist, shady places S. peregrina has tall straight stems with tiny deep red flowers arranged on branched stalks in the axils of alternate leaves. The bright green leaves with toothed edges are similar to nettle leaves. The family name of Scrophularia comes from the use of S. nodosa for the treatment of scrofula the medieval name for tuberculous glands in the neck.
These plants enjoy both full sun and partially shady spots, and are not too picky about where they are placed.
If you have a damp spot in your garden however, these plants might be the perfect fit. Figwort herb plants are known for loving damp, soggy areas, such as on riverbanks or in ditches. They can be also be found in the wild growing in woodlands and moist forest areas.
