How to Care for the Plant
Water
In terms of moisture level in the soil, horsetail prefers a soil that is at least moderately wet. It can even grow in standing water up to a depth of about 4 inches. At the same time, it is also drought-tolerant. This tolerance for very wet and dry conditions makes horsetail uncommonly suited to rain gardens.
Fertilizer
In general, horsetail plants do not need particularly rich or fertile soil, so fertilizing often is not necessary. If desired, you can feed it with a slow-release plant food.
Sunlight
Horsetail is extremely adaptable to various light levels, growing in full sun to part shade, and even deep shade.
Soil
Horsetail will grow in almost any type of soil, from sandy or gravely to wet muck, and tolerates a range of pH levels, from moderately acid to moderately alkaline. Ideally, the soil should be well-drained.
Temperature
Horsetail plants prefer hot sun and high humidity for several hours a day, but it will grow fine with less light and drier air. Winter care is not a concern, although the bright green of the stems may fade during cold winters.
