Huernia schneideriana A.k.a Red Dragon Flower (hew-ERN-ee-uh) is from the genus Huernia. This plant included stem succulents from Eastern and Southern Africa, first described as a genus in 1810. Red Dragon Flower is a beautiful succulent plant that was once thought to be a natural hybrid of Huernia verekeri and Huernia aspera, but is now recognized by some authorities as a legitimate species native to Tanzania.Huernia resemble Stapelia by producing the distinctly scented flowers that lead to the name of Carrion Flower. The smell and the dark red of some types resemble the blood or flesh of dead animals, which attracts the flies that pollinate them.
They should at all times sparingly watered (best rain water with some occasional fertiliser), and in winter time they hardly require any.
Lighting is of special concern with Huernia cactus care. They grow under plants in their native range and can exhibit stress if grown in searing heat and light. Try an eastern or western window that is bright most of the day but doesn’t experience the hottest rays of the day.
Since roots are quite shallow, use a cactus mix or add extra perlite or pumice to regular soil potting soil. A gritty, very free-draining compost is suitable, and clay pots help the plants to dry out between watering.
If you are growing the plant outside, it should be moved indoors if temperatures drop to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 C.)
Choose a well-draining container, preferably one that is unglazed and will allow evaporation of excess moisture.
