Black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) is a tall, attractive, black-culmed bamboo grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 through 10. When planted in containers, black bamboo can be overwintered indoors or left outside. Containers outside, however, drop one plant hardiness zone, and will only survive winter in zones 8 through 10. Black bamboo is considered invasive and grows quickly in the ground and in containers, with older plants growing more rapidly than younger ones.
