The cedar of Lebanon tree (Cedrus libani) is an evergreen with beautiful wood that has been used for high quality timber for thousands of years. Lebanon cedar trees usually have only one trunk with many branches that grow out horizontally, spiraling up. They are long lived and have a maximum life span of over 1,000 years
Water the bonsai daily during the growing season with room temperature water until it drains out the bottom of the planter. Allow the soil to dry before the next watering. Check the soil during the winter and water as needed. Cedar of Lebanon doesn't perform well in wet, soggy soil. Stop watering when it rains and check the bonsai daily for soil moisture levels.
Place the tree outdoors in a spot that receives full sun, or at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. The ideal location provides some protection from extreme temperatures and drying winds. Afternoon shade prevents overheating and sunburn.
Feed the cedar of Lebanon bonsai a balanced 10-10-10 granular fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Follow the package instructions for the amount to apply. In fall, switch to a 0-10-10 to prepare the tree for winter dormancy. Stop feeding the bonsai during the winter.
Pinch new shoots in the spring to maintain the size and shape. Continue to pinch new growth throughout the growing seasons. Avoid using scissors or cutting the needles. Cut needles on a cedar of Lebanon turn brown at the tips.
