Amaranthus caudatus - the love-lies-bleeding - is a species of annual flowering plant native to the American tropics. It can grow anywhere from 3 to 8 feet in height, growing best in full sun, handling a variety of conditions, both humid and arid. It is usually planted as a summer annual, or started indoors in early spring and transplanted outdoors after the last frost in temperate climates.
Amaranth is drought tolerant. however, to produce nice leaves, make sure to keep the soil moist at the root level. ideally, amaranth needs a few inches of water once or twice a week.
Light is an essential factor in maintaining plants. The rate of growth and length of time a plant remains active is dependent on the amount of light it receives. Light energy is used in photosynthesis, the plant's most basic metabolic process.
When it comes to fertilizers, you want to avoid over-fertilizing (just like an overdose of vitamins isn't great for us, either). Less is more, so it’s important to follow what the package says for application amounts.
The Amaranth thrives in areas where the average daytime temperature range is 70° – 82° degrees Fahrenheit (21° C – 28° C), but can tolerate temperatures between 45° – 104° degrees Fahrenheit (7° C – 40° C).The plant will be killed at 39° degrees Fahrenheit (4° C) or below.
Whether it be plastic or clay, make sure the pot you select has drainage holes in the bottom to prevent over-watering.
