The large-fruited or North American species of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) has been the up-and-coming star among soft fruits for several years, both in global fruit cultivation and in domestic gardens. Although these bog bed plants depend on very special soil conditions, such a location is quite easy to accomplish and even long-term cultivation in a large tubs/containers is largely problem-free.
Giant blueberry shrubs should be fertilised in the spring with a calcium rich fertiliser (potash) and mulched with garden compost.
Blueberries prefer an acidic soil, improve yours with peat and mulch from a pine woodland if possible.
Blueberry bushes require little pruning. Keep around six to eight stems per bush. Regularly remove the oldest stems to encourage new growth.
