What is the plant

Angelonia biflora is a perennial herb 40–60 cm high. It belongs to the genus Angelonia (family Plantaginaceae). Native to Brazil, now widely cultivated and often naturalized throughout tropical Asia and parts of tropical Africa.

Angelonia is a genus of about 30 species which occur from Mexico to Argentina and is classified in the Plantaginaceae. They are herbaceous plants occurring mainly in arid and semi-arid habitats. Most Angelonia species can be found in Northeastern Brazil in the Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest namely Caatinga. The flowers of Angelonia are highly specialized in regarding to the pollination, because they have hairs in the inner corolla, which produces oils collected by the oil bee pollinators, specially of the genus Centris. Some species are cultivated as ornamental plants for their snapdragon-like flowers, but need warm temperatures and large amounts of sunlight.

Give the plants a light feeding with 10-5-10 fertilizer once a month, but don’t overdo it. If you give them too much fertilizer, they will produce more foliage and fewer flowers.

  • Sunlight

Give your angelonia plants a full day of sun to provide the energy plants need to bloom continuously. Plants that don't get at least six hours of direct sunlight will get leggy and will have sparse blooms.
