What is the plant

Holboellia coriacea, commonly known as blue china vine, is a woody evergreen climbing vine indigenous to temperate east Asia. It produces white monoecious flowers followed by pink colored sausage-shaped fruits with white colored pulps.

China Blue Vine is a vigorous semi-evergreen woody vine with thick glossy dark green tri-foliate leaves. In spring it produces fragrant bell flowers consisting of two layers - a pale ivory pink outer and a pale mauve-pink inner. In the fall plum-like sized edible richly coloured purple fruits are usually borne in pairs, very unique. The plant is very attractive on a fence, porch, patio, or wall.

It is a good idea to plant holboellia in spring in good garden soil blended with special flower plant soil mix. Plant-based mulch at the foot of the plant will hinder weed growth, retain proper moisture levels and fertilize the soil.
