Crassula ovata cv. Lemon & Lime (Variegated Jade Plant) is a spectacular slow growing cultivar close in appearance to the common jade plant but with shiny cream stripes on spoon-shaped leaves. Just as its all green cousin it is a many-branching succulent shrub.
After planting a jade plant, don’t water it right away. Waiting anywhere from several days to a week before watering lets the roots settle and recover from any damage. Jade plants adapt well to the warm, dry conditions found in most homes. It’s important to keep the plant watered during the growing season (spring, summer) and drier during the dormant season (fall, winter). However, even during the growing season, the soil should be allowed to dry out fully between waterings, as jade is very susceptible to rot. Two new stems will grow from the area that you pruned, causing your plant to grow bushier.
You can prune your Jade plant when ever you feel the need to and pick off the dead or dying leaves on it. If you have stems that is growing out of control, feel free to cut them back to the main stem. Pruning your jade plant isn’t necessary, but a lot of gardeners choose to prune to encourage it to grow thicker. Look for a ‘leaf scar’, or the brown rings around a stem. Prune with a sharp pair of pruning shears.
Jade plants should be fed sparingly. Use a diluted mix of a standard liquid houseplant fertilizer or a fertilizer made for cacti and succulents.
Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny site. Protect in winter in cold areas.
Provide good air circulation, with temperatures between 65 (18 °C) to 75 F (23 °C) and nighttime temperatures between 50 t(10°C) to 60 F (15 °C).
