How to Care for the Plant
Water
A moist soil rich in humus is preferred, and exposure to a bit of cool morning sun will grow the best clumps. Like many perennial plants, watering a hosta deeply will be imperative – on average, they require about an inch (2.5 cm.) of water each week. By establishing a weekly watering schedule, plants can develop a more robust root system that is better able to access water deep in the soil.
Fertilizer
Hostas are very heavy feeders, so don’t be shy when it comes to using plenty of good compost, manure, or other organic fertilizer. Mushroom compost and high-quality, composted manure also make good top dressings in spring.
Sunlight
Full sun, partial shade.
Soil
Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny site. Protect in winter in cold areas.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures should be approximately 65-75ºF + (18-24ºC +), closer to 70ºF is best.
