Astrantia major, the great masterwort, is a species of flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to central and eastern Europe. Growing to 90 cm (35 in) tall by 45 cm (18 in) broad, it is an herbaceous perennial, much used in gardens
Since masterwort plant needs moist soil, it needs to be watered frequently during times of drought, otherwise it will die. It should be fertilized once or twice a year for best growth.
Astrantia grows best in moist soil with plenty of organic material. Plants can be fertilized in early spring and again at mid-summer, but probably is not necessary in rich soils.
Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny site. Protect in winter in cold areas.
After flowering, astrantias can be rejuvenated by cutting them back close to the ground – fresh new foliage and a late crop of flowers are produced soon after. Astrantias don't spread far but they do self seed.
