What is the plant

The tangelo , Citrus × tangelo, is a citrus fruit hybrid of a Citrus reticulata variety, such as a mandarin orange or tangerine, and a Citrus maxima variety, such as a pomelo or grapefruit. The name is a portmanteau of 'tangerine' and 'pomelo'. Tangelos are the size of an adult fist, have a tart and tangy taste, and are juicy at the expense of flesh.

How to Care for the Plant

  • Water

    Water

Water young tangelo trees weekly during the hot dry summers, when the soil is dry, to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. As the tree matures, the roots reach beyond the drip line and the tree gradually becomes more drought resistant. However, never let the soil become completely dry; citrus trees require consistent moisture.

Early spring (or late winter) is also a good time to prune out any diseased, damaged or problematic branches to improve air circulation and general health. Remove any suckers at the base as well.

  • Fertilizer

Feed tangelo trees as soon as new growth appears on the tree with a fertilizer specifically made for citrus trees for optimal production and general tangelo tree care. Fertilize tangelo trees in April, June and August with a fertilizer formulated for citrus trees. Generally, apply fertilizer immediately after watering.

These plants prefer a temperature range of 55-65°F at night and 70-80°F during the day. They like well-draining soil that's fairly rich in organic matter. If you're transplanting into containers, place some drainage material such as gravel in the bottom of the pot.
