How to Care for the Plant
Water
Use a simple ‘soak and dry’ watering cycle. Root rot is always a problem to avoid. Well-draining soil will always be safest.
Pruning
At first glance, there is not much pruning to be done to a star cactus. Its shape is quite forbidding in this regard. When we talk about pruning, perhaps we should refer to, in this case, to pruning the roots when repotting. This may be necessary every few years.
Fertilizer
Fertilizing this cactus is best done from June to September. When it comes to fertilizing, diluted houseplant fertilizer during this growing season will do just fine. As usual, fertilizing during the dormant phase is not necessary.
Sunlight
Best grown in full sun to part shade.
Soil
The natural soil for peyote is of limestone having a basic pH from 7.9 to 8.3., so one should provide adequate calcium (limestone chippings are best if available), and most importantly provide good drainage. There are many combinations possible when making peyote soil.
Temperature
Care of peyote cacti is similar to most cacti. Grow them in a half and half mix of coconut husk and pumice. Restrict water after seedlings establish and keep the plants in indirect sun where temperatures are between 70 and 90 degrees F. (21-32 C.).
