How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water deeply and regularly (mornings are best). Avoid overhead watering.
Pruning
Although deadheading is not necessary, removing some of the flower stems will keep the plant looking more tidy, encourage more blooms and reduce self seeding. If all the flower spikes are cut back at once, it will take 2 to 3 weeks for the plants to start blooming again. Cut back the flower spikes in fall and remove all dead foliage the following spring. Guara has few insect or disease problems. Root rot may be an issue in heavy, poorly drained soils.
Fertilizer
Water and fertilize sparingly to promote compact growth and more flowers.
Sunlight
Flowering perennial gaura needs full sun plenty of room for its long, wispy stems topped by delicate white or pink flowers that twirl in a breeze.
Soil
With well-draining, sandy soil, gaura reqiures nothing more than full sun to thrive.
Temperature
During the winter, let the faded stems on site, they provide protection against the cold. It is also recommended to mulch around the roots to insulate them, especially if you live below USDA Zone 8.
