It is a medium-sized evergreen tree growing to 20 m (66 ft) tall, exceptionally 40 m (131 ft), with a trunk diameter of up to 1 m (3 ft). The shoots are buff-brown, and densely pubescent (hairy). The leaves are needle-like, 10–20 mm long, flattened in cross-section, dark blue-green above, and blue-white below. The cones are 4–7 cm (2–3 in) long, fusiform (spindle-shaped, broadest in the middle), dark purple (almost black) when young, maturing dark brown 5–7 months after pollination, with stiff scales.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
From the second year on, it should be watered once or twice each week. Serbian spruce trees are not drought-tolerant and grow best in soil that stays moist but not muddy. Water them generously each time to encourage the roots to grow deeper.
Fertilizer
Spruce trees do not have very high phosphorous needs and benefit most form an acidic fertilizer designed for evergreens or a high-nitrogen fertilizer with a formula like 12-6-4 or 10-8-6. Organic fertilizer options include compost, fish emulsion, cottonseed meal and alfalfa meal.
Sunlight
Best grown in full sun to part shade.

The Serbian spruce grows in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, well-drained and clay soils.
