Free-flowering, Gaillardia x grandiflora 'Goblin' (Blanket Flower) is a bushy, often short-lived herbaceous perennial with scarlet-red flowers adorned with fringed yellow tips and a reddish-brown cone. Blooming from early summer into fall, the daisy-like flowers provide continuous color in the garden or containers. Their round, reddish-brown seed heads further extend the interest after the flowers are spent. Rich of nectar, the flowers are real magnets for butterflies. Drought and heat tolerant, this Blanket Flower requires little care once established.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
It is extremely heat, drought, humidity and salt tolerant once established. Watering is minimal and new plantlets can be had by cutting down beside a clump in summer.
Pruning
It is best to avoid pruning winterberry hollies, except to remove whole branches for cut flowers or other decorating. Regular maintenance pruning or cutting back, however, will impact the number of flowers and the quantity of fruit that the plant sets. Little pruning should be required, though very old branches can be removed in early spring if they are no longer producing vigorous growth.
Fertilizer
Poor soils seem to encourage more flowering than rich soils, so go easy on (or avoid) the fertilizer.
Soil
These will not tolerate wet, heavy clay soil, particularly in the winter.
Temperature
A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal.
Container
Outstanding for edging, borders, rock gardens or containers.
Additional
Facts about The Goblin: It has been measured to be approximately 190 miles in diameter. This means that Pluto is almost eight times the diameter of the new dwarf planet, so it is incredibly small. The Goblin's extremely elongated elliptical orbit takes around 40,000 years to complete.
