Cistus monspeliensis is a species of rockrose known by the common name Montpellier cistus. It is native to southern Europe and northern Africa, in the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub ecosystems of matorral—maquis shrublands.
Cistus does require soil that is well drained where water won’t stagnate. Set up drainage if necessary with a 16-inch (40 cm) layer of gravel along the bottom of the hole.
If the summer temperatures are too hot, you may need to water sporadically, being a plant that does not need us to place some type of fertilizer.
Rockroses never need pruning but can be pruned at anytime after flowering for shape. They should not be cut way back. Old wood may not produce new growth.
Cistus monspeliensis has no toxic effects reported. Cistus monspeliensis is a shrub with narrow evergreen leaves and a hairy, glandular, sticky surface.
