How to Care for the Plant
Water
Too much or too little water plus insects and mites are the main problems. Root rot usually results from a soil mix that does not drain quickly or overly frequent watering.
Pruning
Use pruning shears to snip off any damaged or unhealthy sections of roots.
Fertilizer
Young plants need extra phosphorus to encourage good root development. Look for a fertilizer that has phosphorus, P, in it(the second number on the bag.) Apply recommended amount for plant per label directions in the soil at time of planting or at least during the first growing season.
Soil
When watering your ivy, always check the soil before adding water.
Temperature
This Ivy doesn't enjoy very warm temperatures. 10°C - 18°C / 50°F - 65°F is good, warmer than this will cause problems in the long term. Placement in a spare room or isolated kitchen for example would normally be ideal.
Container
Exelling in containers and cascading from hanging baskets.
Additional
The toxin responsible for the ill effects seen with English ivy ingestion is a triterpanoid saponin.
