Ctenanthe burle-marxii is a species of evergreen perennial with soft hairy, purple tinge-green stems, 15cm (5.5 inch) long. The striking ovate to oblong ovate leaves are hairless, have strong variegation of dark green with upward strokes of silvery-white. The underleaf has a strong burgundy colouring.
You want to water your plant frequently, especially in spring and summer. Check your plants’ soil often to keep it from drying out. In fall and winter, your prayer plant needs less water when it goes into dormancy. Water when the surface of the soil is dry, but make sure to not let the soil totally dry out.
Begin a regular fertilizing schedule in early spring to give your plant some extra energy to grow. Feed it with half-diluted liquid fertilizer once every two weeks throughout the growing season (March-August). Don’t fertilize in winter, give your plant some well-deserved rest.
When your plant matures, it is quite normal for an occasional leaf to get damaged or start wilting. Prune these leaves when you notice them. Cut the leaf, with clean, sharp scissors, at the base where it connects to the main stalk.
It is a bit more hardy than many other prayer plants, it will tolerate temperatures as low as 55°F / 12°C but absolutely prefers higher temperatures. Awerage warm room temperature is best. Keep your plant away from cold drafts and maintain high humidity.
