Phoenix roebelenii is a small to medium-sized, slow-growing slender tree growing to 2–7 metres (6.6–23.0 ft) tall. The leaves are 60–120 cm (24–47 in) long, pinnate, with around 100 leaflets arranged in a single plane (unlike the related P. loureiroi where the leaflets are in two planes). Each leaflet is 15–25 cm (6–10 in) long and 1 cm broad, slightly drooping, and grey-green in colour with scurfy pubescence below. The flowers are small, yellowish, produced on a 45 cm (18 in) inflorescence. The fruit is an edible 1 cm drupe resembling a small, thin-fleshed date.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Date palms, including pygmy date palms, do best when kept slightly on the dry side. These plants are typically from arid regions and are very sensitive to being over-watered.
Fertilizer
Feed with a weak liquid fertilizer once or twice during the growing season and not at all during the winter. Be aware of potential deficiencies in magnesium, potassium, and manganese, which can cause leaf yellowing and decline.
Sunlight
Date palms like the brightest light that can be provided, including full sun.
Soil
A peat-based mix is perfect, with lots of material for drainage. Palms appreciate good drainage to prevent water-logged roots.
Temperature
These dwarf date palm plants grow best at temperatures ranging from 50° – 75° degrees Fahrenheit (10° C – 24° C). Avoid allowing the temperature to drop below 50° degrees Fahrenheit (10° C).
Container
All varieties of date palms, including pygmy palms, do well slightly pot-bound, so repotting of mature plants should only be carried out every other year. For those who let plants go too long without repotting but still have a palm with strong roots, know that the pot will eventually break, if you use plastic.
