Each pseudobulb has between three and five egg-shaped leaves 100β150 mm (4β6 in) long and 30β35 mm (1.2β1.4 in) wide. The arching flowering stems are 200β400 mm (8β20 in) long with between two and twenty lilac-purple, rarely bluish or pinkish flowers. The flowers are resupinate, 20β30 mm (0.79β1.2 in) long and 30β70 mm (1β3 in) wide, the size depending on the variety. The sepals are oblong to egg-shaped, 20β30 mm (0.79β1.2 in) long and 9β11 mm (0.35β0.43 in) wide. How to Care for the Plant
Water
During the growing season, these plants like moisture but shouldn't sit in a saturated medium. Overwatering can lead to root rot and ultimately cause the plant to yellow or wilt. To determine when you should water, simply stick your finger in the medium. If it feels wet, wait to water until it has slightly dried out. During the winter months, you can put a few more days in between your regular waterings, but don't let the medium dry out entirely.
Pruning
After your Dendrobium has finished flowering remove as much of the spike as possible without cutting into the leafy stem. ... Old stems will not flower a second time, but DON'T remove them, at least not yet. Your plant needs them.
Fertilizer
Feed regularly during the growing season with a balanced orchid fertilizer, following label instructions. At the end of the growing season, reduce fertilizer by about half.
Sunlight
Dendrobium orchids is to give them as much bright light as possible.
Soil
Medium. In nature, Dendrobium bigibbum orchids grow on trees, not in soil. Because of this, they require a light, loose medium that provides plenty of air circulation. Bark chips work well, as do coconut husk, perlite or a mixture of these mediums and small stones.
Temperature
Dendrobiums can withstand hot weather if adequate ventilation and humidity are provided. They are best grown when the temperature is between 65Β°F and 75Β°F in the day and between 55ΒΊF to 60ΒΊF at night.
Container
Plant in a shallow container filled with orchid compost.
