What is the plant
The stem is 30 - 80 cm high with straight or slightly curved stems, which, due to tillering, grow from one node.
Leaves are light green, linear.Inflorescence is a thin spike with a smooth axis, 6 - 15 cm long. Spikelets have 4 - 8 flowers.
The root system is fibrous.
DevelopmentIt rises in April - May. Blooms in June - July. Fruiting in July - August.
Seeds The fruit is a scarious weevil. Size - 4 mm long, 1.5 - 1.75 mm wide, 0.7 - 1 mm thick. The mass of 1000 caryopses is 3.5 - 4 g.
The maximum fertility is 50 - 100 caryopses in one ear. Germination depth - 10 - 13 cm. There is no dormant period.
It infests mainly flax, for which it is a specialized weed, and also spreads with flax seeds, from which it is difficult to separate. It also occurs in spring crops. The flax chaff is widespread mainly in the woodlands where flax is grown.
