Helianthemum known as rock rose, sunrose, rushrose, or frostweed, is a genus of about 110species of flowering plants in the family Cistaceae. They are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, especially in the Mediterranean. Numerous cultivars have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit .The Latin and basic Russian generic names are associated with the fact that the flowers of the plant close at sunset and open at sunrise. Today, the genus Heliantemum includes about 70 representatives, some of which are domesticated and used for decorative cultivation. This is one of the most unpretentious perennial ground covers, capable of growing in almost every garden plot, and even beginners can do simple plant care.
Usually these are shrubs or semi-shrubs, as well as annual or perennial herbaceous plants.
Stem erect or creeping, 10-30 cm tall.
Leaves are oval to linear-lanceolate, simple, located opposite along the length of the stem.
Flowers are single or collected in the form of many types of inflorescences, such as panicles, brushes. The flowers are mostly yellow, can also be orange, pink or white, clustered in a racemose inflorescence. The flower has three inner sepals and two smaller outer sepals. It has five petals, usually shades of yellow, orange. The fruit is a capsule containing many seeds. Representatives of the genus bloom and bear fruit in approximately the same period: in years with hot summers - in May and June, or in July and August, if the summer is rainy and cold.
A significant part of sunflower species form ectotrophic mycorrhizal contacts with fungi from the Truffle family.
Distributed in North Africa, Europe (mainly in the Mediterranean), Asia (from southwestern to central Asia and China), North America and South America
Several Helianthemum species, and the numerous hybrids and cultivars derived from them, are widely grown as ornamental plants, popular in rockeries. They are best grown in well-drained soil in full sun, and have a long flowering period from spring to summer.
This plant is useful.
How to get rid of:
Dig up the area thoroughly. This is not an easy job, because it is not enough just to dig up the ground - you also need to scrupulously select all the rhizomes from it. But on the other hand, this is a very effective way to control perennial weeds.
