Iris xiphium is a vigorous, clump-forming, deciduous, bulbous perennial with long, upright, narrowly lance-shaped, dark grey-green leaves and, in late spring and early summer, erect stems bearing two blue or violet, rarely white or yellow flowers with yellow- or orange-marked falls.
