V. rhytidophyllum is a vigorous, erect, evergreen shrub with deeply-veined, oblong, glossy, dark green leaves and dense, domed clusters of creamy-white flowers in late spring followed by red fruit that ripens to glossy black.Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Foliage may die back (sometimes to the ground) in sub-zero winter temperatures, so in the St. Louis area, it is best to plant this shrub in a protected location shielded from winter winds. If shrub loses good form or needs revitalization, prune to the ground. Otherwise, prune immediately after flowering since flower buds form in summer for the following year.

How to Care for the Plant

Water

Water during prolonged periods of drought.

Pruning

Cut back a leatherleaf viburnum each year, selecting up to one-third of the branches for removal. Cut stems back to the parent branches, where they originate. Choose branches that are unproductive, misshapen or damaged for removal. Thin crowded areas to improve the aesthetic quality of the shrub and to increase air flow within the plant. This type of pruning can be done anytime of year, but if you wait until after flowering, you will not remove any flower buds.

Fertilizer

As long as the soil is of average fertility or better, you don’t need to fertilize

Sunlight

full sun or partial shade

Chalky, Clay, Loamy, Sandy (will tolerate most soil types)
