Encyclia oncidioides is native to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Surinam, Trinidad, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. In Brazil, this orchid is found in lowland and mountain forests along the coast from Rio de Janeiro to Bahia. It usually grows at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level, on trees of the middle floor of primary forests, in areas with high humidity, diffused light and significant air movement. It is a medium to large sized, hot to warm growing, terrestrial or lithophyte, which reaching up to 20 cm in height, with clustered, conical to ovoid, 3-4 cm long and about 2.3 cm wide pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3 strap-shaped, up to 15 cm long and 1.8 cm wide leaves.
