Calodendrum capense or the Cape Chestnut is a small to medium size evergreen tree it has a spreading domed crown and is often multi-trunked.It has deep green oval leaves with a paler underside and slightly wavy margin.From late spring to mid summer it is covered with a wonderful display of masses of pink, faintly scented orchid-like flowers in terminal clusters.The seed are round and warty looking and tend to remain on tree for quite some time.Slightly frost tender when young but becomes much more tolerant with age.Calodendrum capense makes a good shade, specimen or contrast tree. Will grow in coastal areas if protected from the salty winds.
