The Otto Luyken laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a broadleaf evergreen that is found throughout U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 through 8. Otherwise known as the cherry laurel, Otto Luyken features white fragrant flowers and is mainly used as a hedge, shade tree or street tree. The Otto Luyken laurel is native to Europe and Iran, attracts several species of birds to your backyard and reaches heights of 6 to 10 feet if planted and maintained under ideal conditions.
Water the Otto Luyken weekly to a depth of 10 to 12 inches during the first growing season. After the hedge is well established, supplemental irrigation is only required during periods of drought.
Fertilize the hedge with a slow-release product in early spring before new growth appears. Rake away the leaves before spreading the fertilizer around the hedge's base.
Prune the Otto Luyken laurel in late winter or early spring to manage its size, remove dead and decaying branches and encourage new growth. Overzealous pruning inhibits spring flowering. Sunset recommends selectively pruning the Otto Luyken with hand pruners.
