An excellent, hardy perennial relative of the annual sunflower. This forms an upright and bushy clump of coarse green leaves, bearing a late summer display of double golden-yellow daisy flowers. Best in a moist site, then plants will be less prone to developing powdery mildew. Flowers are attractive to butterflies. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring. Excellent for cutting. May need staking.
Providing regular watering, you will be able to maximize flowering period. Watering must be done profusely, but try to avoid water stagnation in the soil around the stems, otherwise you risk to destroy the plant.
It is not necessary to fertilize ornamental sunflowers: if the soil is fertile, they will grow so well, delighting you with their amazing flowers. If you are growing them in bad soil, at the beginning of the vegetative period, the sunflowers should be fertilized with any organic fertilizer.
Any moist but well-drained, alkaline to neutral, good garden soil (sand, chalk or loam). Avoid heavy clay.
