The "Black Dragon" tree (Cryptomeria japonica "Black Dragon") is a semi-dwarf cultivar of the Japanese cedar, a slow-growing coniferous evergreen. "Black Dragon" trees grow up to 10 feet tall and 4 feet wide and have a natural pyramidal shape. The needles are green, but darken to a blackish hue in the summer. The slow growth rate and smaller size of the tree make it suited to container growing. It can also be planted in the ground.
Water the cedar tree as often as necessary to keep the soil moist, but not wet. The amount of watering will vary depending on the environmental conditions where the container is placed. Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil dries.
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species.
Prune out dead or damaged branches as you see them, using pruning shears for branches under 3/4-inch in diameter or a pruning saw for larger branches. Make the cut just outside the branch collar, which is the small ridge at the base of the branch where it connects to the trunk.
