Anthurium oerstedianum is a member of section Pachyneurium, the genus Anthurium. It is endemic to Costa Rica at elevations of 900 to 1,300 m, principally from the Pacific slope in the southwest in the rain forest.

Anthurium is a genus of about 1000 species of flowering plants, the largest genus of the arum family, Araceae. General common names include anthurium, tailflower, flamingo flower, and laceleaf. The genus is native to the Americas, where it is distributed from northern Mexico to northern Argentina and parts of the Caribbean. Anthurium oerstedianum as a cold plant species was first described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott.
