How to Care for the Plant
Water
Dieffenbachia requires high humidity for cultivation. However, you should water it very moderately, about twice a week.
Pruning
Pruning is not required.
Fertilizer
To keep your Dumb Cane healthy, use a balanced indoor plant fertilizer once a month during the growing season. It does not need to be fed during the winter, but if you notice its leaves turning yellow, you may need to add some extra nutrients to the soil.
Sunlight
Find the most convenient location with bright but diffused light for this houseplant. You can choose from south-, west- and east-facing windows with partial shade.
Soil
We recommend using a loam-based soil compost for growing this species, preferably combined with chalk, sand and clay.
Propagation
If you want to propagate this showy plant, you can easily do it by root tip cuttings during the warm season. You can also use the air-layering method.
Temperature
Dieffenbachia tolerates hot and dry climates. When grown at home, the appropriate temperature range is about 63-81°F (17-27°C).
Container
Choose a large planter to accommodate your green pet's growth and make sure the soil is well-drained. This can be achieved by placing a thick layer of drainage substrate (with perlite or coarse sand) at the bottom of the pot.
Fun fact
The harmful properties of this seemingly harmless greenie have become subject of widespread urban legend. People say that Dumb Cane contains a deadly toxin that can cause symptoms such as speech impediment, blindness, and other health problems (even death!) just by touching it.
