Chinese Evergreen "Slim Jim" Care
Aglaonema “Slim Jim”

Chinese Evergreen (common name for Aglaonema) 'Slim Jim' is a variety of rare evergreen species in the family Araceae, originally from Southeast Asia, growing mainly in the thick subtropical forests of China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This specific plant stands out due to its long and thin dark green foliage with lighter green textural flushes as well as notable white stems, so you will surely identify it.
How to Care for the Plant

Water

Although being an easy-care plant, you must do your best to avoid overwatering. Water the plant only when you are sure that the top layer of the soil is already dry. Normally, it is enough to water the plant two to three times a month.

Pruning

Trimming the stems is highly effective, as it stimulates the development of the plant, which has previously become visibly leggy.

Fertilizer

If you buy the soil mixture from the store, it will already have plenty of nutrients for the plant's active growth.

Sunlight

“Slim Jim” is relatively moderate in lighting. Although generally, the plant tolerates shade well, individual plants with variegated leaves, such as this one, need a bit of light, more specifically, indirect light interleaved with ample sunlight, like by the south-facing windows.

Soil

For this plant, the soil must be well-drained. Most potting soils will do.

Propagation

To propagate the plant, use the stem cuttings and root them in water for around two months, preferably in spring or summer.

Temperature

Native to subtropics and tropics, Chinese evergreen requires a warm growing environment. Do not allow the plant to be located where the temperatures may fall below 50-60°F (10-16°С).

Container

Choose the pot that has enough space for fast growth. You will need to replant Aglaonema into a larger container as soon as its increased plant size becomes noticeable.

Fun fact

Such unique plants as the Chinese evergreen are more than impressive in their decorative qualities! Even the scientific name of the plant itself is a reference to Greek words "aglos" and "nema," meaning "a shiny thread." But it is still dangerous for pets due to toxicity!
