Tradescantia sillamontana Care
Tradescantia sillamontana

Tradescantia sillamontana has a very recognizable and distinctive appearance. The leaves are arranged in a precise geometric shape. Almost completely white hairs cover all parts of the plant: leaves, shoots, and even the buds. These protect the plant from direct sunlight and excessive evaporation. Shoots and stems reach a height of 30–40 cm, first erect, later prostrate and rooting at the soil surface. The leaves are fleshy, ovate, 3–7 cm long, covered with grayish-white short hairs. During the summer, the flowers appear at apical growth points or in the axils of the bracts; these are typical Tradescantia flowers. The corolla consists of three bright purplish-pink to purple petals and three small sepals.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water moderately and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during the growing season. Water sparingly in winter. Pinch growing tips to encourage bushiness. Cutting the plants back once flowering has ceased can often promote a second bloom and will help prevent re-seeding.
Pruning
Clip or pinch off dead leaves and stems. If stems have rotted at the root, pull them out, and make sure to let the soil dry out before the plant's next watering.
Fertilizer
Use slow-release fertilizer for container plants. Avoid using too much fertilizer.
Sunlight
Semi-shade location.
Soil
Requires a well-drained, loose mixture of potting soil.
Temperature
The plant can be grown in the areas with the lowest temperatures from 30°F (-1.1°C) to 50°F (+10°C). Inside, average room temperatures from 65°F/18.3°C to 75°F/23.8°C.
Container
Whether your potted plants are indoors or outdoors, proper drainage is an essential element to ensure they stay healthy.
