Despite Gloxinia being a perennial plant, it is often cultivated as annuals. Its active growth and flowering season is late spring and summer, giving an opportunity to adorn any room with various colored burgeons. Perennials have persistent periods of dormancy which could be confused with the death of the plant.
How to Care for the Plant

Water

The soil of the Gloxinia Plant should stay slightly wet all the time as it loves watering. Still, it is important to avoid misting the leaves and flowers as it can cause the appearance of dark spots or germination of fungal diseases.

Pruning

No special pruning is needed but get rid of dead leaves to keep the plant healthy.

Fertilizer

High-phosphorus liquid plant fertilizer would be the best to use during the growing season. Use it every two weeks while watering, avoiding contact with leaves.

Sunlight

Bright still indirect lighting would be the best for Gloxinia as it can’t stand direct light and might start to shrink.

Soil

Slightly acidic soil like gardenia or African Violet soil would be the best to grow Gloxinias.

Propagation

Propagation can be made by sprouting the cut leaves in damp sand or seed-starting soil during the growing season or by dividing the tubers during repotting. Growing by seed in late winter is possible as well.

Temperature

Gloxinia stands 60°-75°F (16°-25°C) room temperature. No hyperthermia nor frosts are acceptable.

Container

Repotting is not allowed during the growing season. Wait for winter when all of the leaves are dead and fallen. Choose the pot to be slightly larger than the previous one. Annuals shouldn’t be repotted.

Fun fact

In the Victorian ”language of flowers,” Gloxinia stands for “Love at First Sight.”
