Japanese pieris Care
Pieris japonica

Pieris japonica is a shrub or a small tree (1–4 metres or 3.3–13.1 feet tall, occasionally up to 10 metres) with alternate, simple leaves on brittle stems. The flowers are white and borne in early spring. The plant is poisonous if consumed by people or animals. The name "andromeda" originated from an earlier genus name for the plant. The flower blooms in February or March and lasts usually for two or three weeks.

How to Care for the Plant
Water
Water Japanese pieris deeply about once a week. The soil should be moist to about 3 inches deep in the soil. If it feels dry, water it. Avoid over-saturating the soil.
Fertilizer
Fertilize Japanese pieris with a 10-10-10 granulated fertilizer at a rate of 1 pound per 100 square feet. Cottonseed meal is an organic alternative that works well for acid-loving plants. Apply the fertilizer once in late winter before flowering and in the early spring after the blooms are spent. Spread it evenly beneath the shrub. Water the shrub thoroughly after the application to incorporate it into the soil.
Sunlight
Choose a site with full to partial shade.
Soil
The plant prefers rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter and an acidic pH. If your soil isn’t particularly rich, work in a thick layer of compost before planting. Apply a 2- to 3-inch thick layer of pine needle mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and prevent weed growth.
Temperature
The plant is not frost-tender. It can be grown in the areas with the lowest winter temperatures down to −34.4°C (−30°F).
