Aphids are sap-sucking insects causing stunted plant growth, leaves, buds, and flower deformation, and infectious disease transmission.

Signs of damage
These insects are so small (a few millimeters in length), that winds can transport them for fairly long distances. They are often green, but might be red or brown, as well. They move quite slowly and cannot jump or hop. Aphids excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew, because the plant sap from which they feed contains excess carbohydrates relative to its low protein content. To satisfy their protein needs, they absorb large amounts of sap and excrete the excess carbohydrates. Honeydew is used as food by ants, honeybees, and many other insects.
How to prevent
Monitor your plants. Beginning early in the season, check your plants frequently for the presence of aphids, paying close attention to plants you've found aphids on before.
Heal
Neem oil, insecticidal soaps, and horticultural oils are effective against aphids. Be sure to follow the application instructions provided on the packaging. You can often get rid of aphids by wiping or spraying the leaves of the plant with a mild solution of water and a few drops of dish soap.
