Gaultheria phillyreifolia. Gaultheria phillyreifolia is another evergreen shrub from Chile and Argentina with small serrated leaves and a dense growth pattern. Like many Gaultherias, G. phillyreifolia produces white urn-shaped flowers in the spring, and berries, in this case dark blue-black, in the fall.
Grow Gaultheria procumbens in moist but well-drained, acidic soil in full sun to partial shade. Water deeply and regularly (mornings are best). Avoid overhead watering.
Gaultheria grows best with a little shade and does best in acid soil – if yours is neutral or alkaline, simply grow your plants in containers of ericaceous (acidic) compost instead.
The creeping and suckering stems are easily controlled by chopping through them with a spade once a year.
