Atriplex patula (spear saltbush) is an annual, dioecious weed that reproduces through seeds. This weed grows in various shapes and sizes, it has a pivoting root that has many branches. This weed is very similar to the pigweed.It prefers fertile, humus infused and deep soils. The stem has many branches that start from the base upwards. The height of the stem can be 80-100 cm. The basal part of the stem has a rectangular shape.
Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline and saline soils.
Most reports say that no member of this genus contains any toxins and that all have more or less edible leaves. However, one report says that if very large quantities are eaten they can cause photosensitivity. If plants are grown with artificial fertilizers they may concentrate harmful amounts of nitrates in their leaves.
